Our Strategy

We have set a long term strategic goal: to invest in people’s futures.

Our Strategy

Our strategy Together for Bedford sees us build on our rich heritage in education and grant giving by working together with the community to transform young lives in Bedford Borough.

We aim to work for a generation across our whole community, to help tackle the cyclical relationship between disadvantage, lack of opportunities, low educational outcomes and future poverty.

We have introduced innovative and collaborative programmes supporting children and young people: the Accelerator Programme and Bedford Giving. We spent two years trialling the Accelerator Programme building partnerships with a small number of local primary schools and public bodies, before going live and getting more schools onboard.

With Bedford Giving we have been working in collaboration with local funders and businesses. We are now strengthening our networks to mobilise the community behind the movement’s mission to grow a brighter future for the next generation.

We aim to be outward-facing, collaborative and inclusive, and become a knowledge engine, as we gather evidence and insights to share with everyone who joins us on our mission.

Our continuing commitment to high quality education and a generous bursary programme both support this goal, as does our continuing grants programme, which aims to have the greatest impact we can, for the people who need our help most.

Together we can help build a community where everyone can thrive.

Our History

SIR WILLIAM HARPUR’S VISION

The Harpur Trust was founded over 450 years ago by Sir William Harpur, a local man born to humble beginnings who made his fortune as a merchant tailor and became Lord Mayor of London in 1561.

Today our activities are still inspired by Sir William Harpur’s vision. He understood the value of education, and he saw what needed to be addressed to support the people in his hometown of Bedford.
