At The Harpur Trust we support, promote and provide education. We offer accommodation for Bedford’s older people.

Our vision for Bedford is to help build a community where everyone can thrive. One of the main ways we do this is through our Grants Programmes which aim to have the greatest impact we can on the people who most need our help.

Our grants support our local community, Bedford Borough, in a variety of ways:

  • Through our Grants to Charities and Community Groups we award more than £1m a year to local charities and community groups, running projects to help improve the lives of others.
  • By helping individuals with university bursaries or with uniform grants for pupils going to secondary school.
  • We are piloting a new Community Micro Grants Programme  for new organisations or those new to funding applications, providing support for writing grant applications up to £2,000.

We are founding partners of Bedford Giving which has been set up to create a brighter future for children and young people in the borough. Bedford Giving also runs occasional grants programmes designed and led by members of the community.

We sponsor one off events to allow us to connect and interact with our local community and to show our support for Bedford.

We are also committed to widening access to our schools (Bedford Girls’, Bedford Modern and Bedford School) and each year we are able to offer some financial support to a number of students who show significant ability, but would otherwise be unable to afford the fees, through our Bursary Scheme.

If you are an organisation or an individual and you think we can help support you, visit our pages outlined above, talk to one of our team.

Our History

SIR WILLIAM HARPUR’S VISION

The Harpur Trust was founded over 450 years ago by Sir William Harpur, a local man born to humble beginnings who made his fortune as a merchant tailor and became Lord Mayor of London in 1561.

Today our activities are still inspired by Sir William Harpur’s vision. He understood the value of education, and he saw what needed to be addressed to support the people in his hometown of Bedford.
