How to apply

We give grants to local community projects, awarding over £11 million over the past 10 years. Find out here how your organisation can apply.

How to Apply

If you’re a charity or non-profit organisation thinking about applying for a grant we strongly recommend you read our guidance notes below for further information about our charitable objectives which your project will need to align to, how we decide on which grants to fund, conditions of funding and payments. It also includes information on what we do not fund, such as businesses, costs already incurred or promotion of religion.

We also have additional guidance for Social Enterprise Guidance. You may also wish to review our help pages for filling out your Application Form.

Our Grants Team spend a lot of time visiting projects and talking to potential applicants before they apply. We encourage you to contact us by email or on 01234 369500, to talk to us about your project before applying.

Application forms

The form you fill in will depend upon the amount of funding you are requesting:

For projects of £2,000 or less:

We are piloting a new Community Micro Grants Programme for new organisations or those new to funding applications, providing support for writing grant applications up to £2,000.

For projects of £5,000 or less:

Your application can be considered under our Small Grants Programme which means you can proceed immediately to the full Stage 2 Application Form without having to fill in our Stage 1 preliminary proposal form.

We will look through your application and we may ask you some additional questions, before it is considered at our Grants Meeting.

For projects of more than £5,000:

All funding requests for more than £5,000 will need to follow our two-stage application process.

We need you to send us an outline of your project as a preliminary proposal on a Stage 1 Application Form for initial consideration. We will discuss your Stage 1 application at our Grants Meeting and decide whether to invite you to submit a detailed Stage 2 Application. To begin your application process please apply online for a stage 1 or alternatively you can download a Stage 1 Application Form and email it to grants@harpurtrust.org.uk.

Please note the application forms  are Word documents to be filled in. They may open in ‘Viewing Mode’ for security reasons on your device. Please click ‘Enable Content’ (security warning bar above document) and then click arrow next to ‘Viewing’ (blue button top right) and select ‘Editing’.  Then save the document at this point before proceeding and it will subsequently open in editing mode.

Our History

SIR WILLIAM HARPUR’S VISION

The Harpur Trust was founded over 450 years ago by Sir William Harpur, a local man born to humble beginnings who made his fortune as a merchant tailor and became Lord Mayor of London in 1561.

Today our activities are still inspired by Sir William Harpur’s vision. He understood the value of education, and he saw what needed to be addressed to support the people in his hometown of Bedford.
