Bursaries Impact

The largest area of public benefit through our schools is the provision of means-tested bursaries to help lower-income families pay all or part of their school fees.

Bursaries Impact

Each year we support hundreds of pupils with their school fees, with on average three quarters being ‘transformational’, with the bursaries given accounting for more than 70 per cent of school fees.

Our schools report regularly on the impact bursaries have on students’ educational attainment and life chances. Bursary students achieve significantly higher external exam results than would be expected given their impact and bursary alumni indicate that that the support given puts them on a life changing trajectory.

Our History

SIR WILLIAM HARPUR’S VISION

The Harpur Trust was founded over 450 years ago by Sir William Harpur, a local man born to humble beginnings who made his fortune as a merchant tailor and became Lord Mayor of London in 1561.

Today our activities are still inspired by Sir William Harpur’s vision. He understood the value of education, and he saw what needed to be addressed to support the people in his hometown of Bedford.
